Bowland Fly Fishing

River Aire

Peter Scholes

The River Aire is perhaps one of the less well known fly fishing rivers in the Yorkshire Dales nonetheless it has some excellent fly fishing opportunities and a long fly fishing tradition. Is was the favourite haunt of the well known Skipton angler and writer T K Wilson who wrote under pseudonym of "Broughton Point". Between Skipton and Coniston Cold the River Aire would be described as a medium sized Dales river and above Coniston Cold it reduces in width and becomes a more intimate fly fishing stream.

The best of the fly fishing on the River Aire is from just West of Skipton to around Kirkby Malham and although access is limited Bowland fly fishing has access to several productive beats on the upper river

The River Aire is within easy reach of Leeds, Bradford, Manchester, Harrogate and York and with a direct rail link to Skipton from London Kings Cross makes it easy to visit even from the South of England.

The River Aire is a limestone stream and has abundant insect life, the Brown Trout and Grayling are possibly the fittest and heaviest length for length in any Yorkshire Dales river.
